Hiker Kicks Off 4,700-Mile Trek

By Rocky Thompson on March 15th, 2010

Lover of death marches Andrew Skurka departed on his 4,700-mile jaunt through Alaska and Canada. He’ll go through four mountain ranges, six U.S. National Parks, and two Canadian parks. Right now he’s on skis, but he’ll make most of the trip by simply walking. We can cut him a break about the skis-the high yesterday was 15F and the low -25F. He’s updating his Twitter feed via a satellite phone, and the National Geographic Adventure blog. Whenever I hear about people undertaking huge tasks like this, I just hope they make it the first few weeks. After that no one will notice if you flake out. That one time Richard Branson tried to fly around the world in a balloon and then he crashed a couple miles from the launch site. All the same press who covered the takeoff just drove over and covered his crash. Obviously that’s a hilarious story, but I would feel bad for Skurka or the blind guy hiking the AT if something bad happened the first few days.
