Four Lost Snowboarders Spend Night Outside After Riding Out of Bounds
By Rocky Thompson on March 2nd, 2010
Four teenage snowboarders rode beyond Sugarloaf’s resort boundaries and then got on their cell phones for help when they realized they were lost. Maine search-and-rescue reached within shouting distance that night, but strong winds and heavy snow impeded the search, and they called it off at midnight. They told the kids to “hunker down, dig themselves into the snow, line it with pine boughs and just huddle together to stay warm through the night,” and they somehow restrained themselves from adding, “and don’t ski out of bounds next time.” The search resumed at 5am, and the four were found and recovered without requiring hospitalization. Sugarloaf is looking into suspending their passes, and the warden service is assessing whether to charge them for the rescue.
