Photo Scavenger Hunt
By Rocky Thompson on January 28th, 2010
An Everest historian thinks that he’s pinpointed the body of ill-fated climber Andrew Irvine. Tom Holzel poured over high resolution photos until finding an ‘oblong blob’ that he believes is George Mallory’s 1924 climbing partner. The goal in this case is to recover an ancient Vest Pocket Kodak camera that could contain a picture of Mallory standing atop the summit of Everest. First of all, even if these two guys made the summit, they would have been so bent out of their minds from lack of oxygen that I wouldn’t be surprised if Irvine forgot to take off the camera lens cover. Also, as Wade from The OutPost points out, it’s not exactly like we’d be celebrating the first successful summit attempt since they never made it down. Still, kind of intriguing. I just don’t want ol’ Tom Holzel to get his hope up too high in case they get to the site he’s found and the ‘oblong blob’ is just a rock. Lot of rocks on that hill.
