Colorado Ice Climber Falls 100 Feet When Column Collapses
By Rocky Thompson on January 14th, 2010
An ice climber in Vail fell 100 feet while climbing a feature known as The Fang. The Fang is a 130-foot column of ice visible from the highway, and it doesn’t stretch to the ground every year.
Tony Angelis, who has been ice climbing in the Vail area at least 12 years, said that the Fang had just connected to the ground this weekend. He said at the time it was very slender - “a pencil” - and would need some more time to “fatten up” before it was climbable.
It took rescue crews 45 minutes to reach the climber by snowmobile. He was not crushed by the falling ice but is listed in serious condition.
