The Price of Standing at the Top of the World

By Rocky Thompson on December 10th, 2009

Alan Arnette filed a post for Outside about how much you can expect to pay to get guided to the top of Everest. In Jon Krakauer’s first-hand account of the 1996 disaster on the hill, he said that clients in his group paid about $65k each. That price hasn’t climbing too sharply, with western guides charging $54k to $74k. That sounds like a lot, but you have to think of Everest base camp as an all-inclusive resort since the guide companies fully support your trip. You can get local guides and pay in the $30k range.
