Local Lange Girl 2009
By Rocky Thompson on December 9th, 2009
When a new owner came in and bought my old ski shop, his wife tore down all the Lange girl posters we had hanging in the service area. We all whined about how they were collector’s items, which easily ranks among the stupidest arguments I’ve ever backed in my life.
Those early years, the Lange girl was a model who likely had her boots on the wrong feet for the first couple photos. Now Lange shoots photos with actual female skiers, and they also sponsor this ridiculous contest with Freeskier to hunt for local Lange girls. Last year only 50 women entered the competition, but their photos posted on Freeskier still received over a million pageviews. What does Freeskier pay in exchange for all this attention? “All regional winners will make out with some Lange and Freeskier schwag. The national winner will get print coverage in Freeskier magazine.” Sweet, schawg.

Let’s set the record straight. I used to be in the rock and roll business, and from what I heard, it is “swag”
and it stands for “sh_t we all get”
meaning the junk that the entire crew gets on the road, T-shirts, albums, etc.
Being in the TV/film business for almost 20 years now, we use “swag” too. Never really thought about where the term came from though. Learn something new everyday.
Scwhag: Sub-par product given away because it isn’t worth much/is leftover.
