180ft Silos in Omaha to Become Climbing Gym
By Rocky Thompson on December 3rd, 2009
A massive stand of 62 silos in Omaha has been a dead(er) spot in the town for years. A young entrepreneur won a contest a few years ago with his plan to turn it into a climbing gym, but he couldn’t pull down the necessary permits and he’s since sold the spot to a new bright-eyed idealist.
“There’s nothing in Nebraska to climb,” Brock said. “I’ve climbed mountains, and when I climb the silos, you get that same feeling. It’s an adrenaline rush.”
The first half of that statement is true. I’ve climbed inside grain elevators in Minnesota, and it was just like any other gym except that climbers peeling off the walls were pretty close to each other. A 180-foot silo would be a great teaching tool for multi-pitch. Not a lot of overhang on silos, but you can’t complain about the height.

There’s one of these in Dallas too, it’s pretty cool - 180 feet high, all indoors

I was in there 5 days a week when I was stuck in Texas doing a consulting job.
there’s plans for indoors too, once they get all the old grain out
