EPA Finds Mercury in All Fish

By Rocky Thompson on November 18th, 2009

A National Lake Fish Tissue Study conducted over five years that examined fish from all regions of the U.S. found mercury accumulating in all fish they tested. Forty-nine-percent of the lakes had mercury above the .3 part-per-million that the EPA deems safe for humans. They study didn’t examine rivers, but it’s fairly safe to assume that if all fish in lakes are being poisoned by fluorescent lighting and mining, then fish in streams can’t be much better off. Wild caught, young fish are the safest to eat since they have less time to soak up toxic levels of mercury. The irony is that the more you pay for fish in restaurants, often times the worse it is for you. Nice sushi restaurants buy the best looking fish, which are older and more loaded with thermometer juice.
