Copper Skiers, Meet Your New Corporate Overlords

By Rocky Thompson on November 18th, 2009

The real estate investment corp Intrawest has sold Copper Mountain to Utah-based Powdr Corp. The deal was announced yesterday, and they say it won’t affect season passes this season. This is an important point since pricing wars and generally cheap season passes in Colorado have lead to the creation of their Super Passes that gets you onto the snow at several mountains.

For this season, people will be able to use their Super Pass to ride Copper, Winter Park, and a few days at Steamboat. Next season Copper is going to have to compete in this market. Who the hell would buy a season pass to only ride Copper? Your choices next season would be to ride Winter Park and Steamboat, or Copper alone, or A-Basin, Vail, and Breck. (Hopefully I have that right, I never ski Colorado.) Tough times ahead for Copper Mountain lovers; ride the hell out of that hill this year.

I usually buy the Epic Pass (A-Basin, Vail, Beaver, Keystone, and Breck). It’s $599…very cheap. Copper can partner with A-Basin also…they partner with nearly everyone and maybe Loveland. Still, it will be tough.

I’d take Copper over Winter Park any day, and since Steamboat is out in the middle of nowhere, it isn’t that big of a deal. I guess we’ll see if they feel the squeeze.
