Power Peg Trail Charging

The inventor of the Power Peg developed the idea while looking for batteries for his Walkman during an Appalachian Trail hike. It’s remarkable that he’d conceive such a simple, green battery charger while using such a crappy music player. The Power Peg works like an alternator in a car. Magnets bounce up and down enough to provide 2.5 watts of power to juice up your GPS or cell phone. The device costs about $150. What’s more interesting will be the future applications of this product. When they get the size down, we’ll be able to have these things in all our phones and gadgets so that they need to get plugged-in less. If you want to be an early adopter, you can pre-order a Power Peg direct.

No need to wait, the DoD is already working on a version built into a back pack frame which does the same. However, shrinking the thing isn’t so easy since the laws of electro-magnetism don’t scale the same way and still put out the same power.
