Alex Honnold Free Soloing Half Dome

By Rocky Thompson on August 25th, 2009

It’s okay to be afraid of heights; it’s a good survival mechanism. The North Face sponsored the first free solo (no rope, no harness) climb of Half Dome’s NW face by Alex Honnold back in September 2008. It seems like Alex catches that height fear for a split second towards the end of the video and then manages to pull back from the ledge, not literally of course.

Update: For some reason they put the video on password protection. No idea why. Usually you want to tell people about the things you’re sponsoring. You can see Alex’s blog here.

Any hints as to the password?

What the hell is this “Private Video” crap?

What’s the password to get in?

Is that a Pirate video? Ahoy!

So I think this was an unofficial video (not a TNF sponsored vid) shot by a friend. I believe the official video of Honnold climbing halfdome will be released as part of Progression. See: http://www.reelrocktour.com/ for info.

Perhaps it is currently locked due to some content that needs to be edited or removed…

I just clicked thru the password thing and saw the video just fine.

Impressive climbing, to be sure. But “a bunch of hot chicks at the summit” keeps him going? At the end there, his face seemed to register a bit of the realization that something as wildly dangerous and profound might not be worth that kind of shallow fantasy.

Plus, that was about the lamest van-apartment setup I’ve seen, other than my own.
