Waterproof Sleeping Bag from Mammut

By Rocky Thompson on August 14th, 2009

Mammut is selling their Shield Sleeping Bag as a bivy and sleeping bag rolled into one. The shelter is a 2.5lb, 15F down sleeping bag wrapped in a waterproof/breathable fabric. That face hole that fills up with water if it rains? The Shield comes with a visor that you pull down to keep out precipitation, or I guess you could just roll over on your stomach and put your face hole into the ground. The Shield sounds like a boon for fastpackers, and if it sell well I’m sure we’ll see versions of it from several of the other big outdoor companies. We’ll have to see how much water condenses in the sleeping bag when vapor can’t get through the waterproof/breathable quickly enough. This would be a nice setup for short, one- or two-night trips into the backcountry with minimal gear.

not sure i like the style of this bag, almost certain that the moisture loadup due to the closed in style would be a pest.
