Edward Abbey’s Fire Tower Gets Voted Into ‘Fire Tower Hall of Fame’
By Rocky Thompson on July 29th, 2009
Two fire towers in the Grand Canyon National Park have been added to the National Historic Lookout Register. That something called “The National Historic Lookout Register” exists should come as a surprise to no one. What else can guys who live in these things, avoiding human contact for months on end think about, except to pine for a vote to get into the Lookout Hall of Fame? One of the two just added to the register includes the place Edward Abbey called home for four years in the late 60s and early 70s. Be sure to add it to your summer tour of historically important lookout towers and band shells.
