Bears in Colorado Breaking Into Occupied Homes

By Rocky Thompson on July 27th, 2009

A man in Boulder put three shotgun slugs into a hungry bear that broke into his house early this morning. This is the third time a bear’s broken into a Boulder County home in the last four days; each time the bear ripped a screen out of an open window and climbed through. They’re studying our habits and learning. Soon they’ll begin using tools. So I guess the thing to do now is close and lock all your windows if you live in Boulder? Hope you have A/C.

A bear also broke into an empty TV station in Colorado a few days ago and tore the place apart. It cleaned out the fridge and trash cans, and then for some reason knocked a filing cabinet across the room.

““As soon as I knew there was a bear inside the house, I went to gather up both our weapon and our ammunition, because they are in two different places, and went to place myself with the weapon between the family and the bear,” said Paul Fischer, Brenda’s husband.”

Mistake #1. Not keeping it loaded.

“The first two rounds were birdshot and the third was a rubber bullet,”

Mistake #2. Loading it with nonlethal ammunition. Besides, even if you load it with nonlethals, it’s still legally lethal force and can cause you to think you can use a firearm when you can’t under the law - which can get you booked on Assault with a Deadly Weapon regardless of what the shotgun was actually loaded with.

00 buck or a slug and that bear would have gone down after the first round.

Someone’s going to be rethinking his home defense plans tonight, to be sure.

Slug followed by nine 00 buck here.
