Tiny Girl Catches Monster Catfish

An 84-pound girl reeled in a 9-foot, 200-pound catfish in Northeast Spain. Call me naïve, but for some reason I thought catfish were native to the Southern U.S. I mean, how are they even going to get that whole thing into a Po’ Boy? Her dad says the 11-year-old fought with the fish for 20 minutes before he helped her land it. That’s not much of a fight for 200lbs, maybe her dad neglected to mention that they’d dynamited the hell out of the fish before she snagged it. This reminds me of that Photoshopped giant hog story from a few years back.

There are more then 3000 species of catfish all over the world and the European species have average size of 1.2–1.6m (about 4′-5′) so it’s more than possible.

The # of species is astronomical. There is a catfish in the Amazon that chews into and eats the inside of other fish.

I was freediving in a pit in a MN city called Mankato. I was pulling fishing tackle out of a huge culvert cage and realized on the other side starting back at me was the hugest set of lips I’d ever seen. It was a catfish that could have engulfed half my body if it wanted. When I scared it, the tail sent out a shock wave taht sounded like a shotgun in the water.

That must have been one seriously lazy fish to be pulled in like that. 200lbs, what kind of tackle was she using to not just have it snap as soon as the fish wanted to leave? I’d give her far more coolpoints if she’d noodled this beast.
