The 11 Greenpeace activists who scaled Mount Rushmore to negatively draw attention to the climate change bill were given an October court date. They didn’t appear in court, which is too bad because maybe we would have gotten a sweet newspaper photo of the activist who was clearly wearing a Goat jacket in this behind-the-scenes Rushmore assault video. As much as I don’t like this kind of behavior, I can’t entirely condemn it since it involved rock climbing instead of dressing like an idiot and, in some small way, Goat jackets.
Thanks Sara

Really not cool of those GP douche bags to do that but since I know a bunch of them I can tell you that most of their ass clown behaviour is basically just designed to get them the attention their parents neglected to give them when they were children.
I hope they get some time.
I think we should make them club baby seals before we make them rot in jail! Then and only then will they realize the error of their ways! The comments on that article about the court date were mind-boggling. I’m not a lawyer, but I’m pretty sure to “hurl them off the mountain” doesn’t quite fit the crimes of trespassing and offending our sensibilities.
If (more like when, considering the documentation they made themselves) they’re convicted of crimes then let the legal system sort it out and mete out punishment. Sorry in advance that it won’t fit either your or my own concept of justice. It’s not supposed to fit any one person’s concept of justice. It’s supposed to fit a slowly evolving concept of justice that has roots much old than any of the faces on Rushmore.
It’s easy to forget about getting laid off or not having health care or having little ability to make a difference in the world around us when we can be so reactionary to the things other people do. But for my opinion, I think we’d be better off spending the time and energy wasted concerning ourselves with these “terrorists” on volunteering, self-reflection, prayer — heck, maybe even just going out for a nice long hike.
whatever dudes, they were making a point and having fun. what’s the big deal?
I think everybody’s missing the important point here: Rappel-sailing is the next big thing. Getting hurled against rocks by the power of the wind while dangling hundreds of feet in the air! Sweet!
And I totally agree, we should judge all those GPers by the few you’ve met. Lock ‘em all up! Activism should be illegal!
Just wanted to say - I’m the activist wearing the Goat jacket. Actually, several of the activists had Goat gear - it works well in many different conditions.
I gotta say - I expected a little more support from the BC world - companies like Patagonia, Black Diamond, Petzl, REI and other have long supported environmental activism and peaceful direct action. Any examination of history has shown that peaceful direct action and civil disobedience have been crucial to nearly all of the modern rights most of us take for granted - from civil rights, to voting rights, to the 8-hour work day. And in more modern times - Greenpeace (And many others) have used actions like this to call action to the most vital issues of our time. It’s sadly telling that scientists overwhelmingly agree climate change is real, is human-caused, and is urgent - while far less of the general public share this sentiment. Actions like this clearly help raise the sense of urgency, awareness, and outcry on issues that our own government agencies recognize as a dire threat to our society. I’d love to just do some self-reflection - but as long as Exxon talks louder than my self-reflection - we need actions like this to amplify our voices.
Thanks to the commenters for some humor and positivity. And yes - I would encourage all of us to not lump any group comprised of millions of supporters by the few that you may know.
Satlwater - come get to know me and my friends - I can assure you our actions are rooted in a thoughtful, informed, and passionate commitment to making the world a better place.
