Supreme Court Rules ‘Thumbs Up’ To Dumping Mining Waste in Lakes and Rivers
By Rocky Thompson on June 24th, 2009
Great news if you own a massive gold mining company and need to dump 4.5 million tons of slurry mining waste! The Supreme Court ruled that the Army Corps of Engineers has the right to issue permits to mining companies to dump waste into water even if they know it will literally obliterate life in that body of water. Apparently turning a body of water into a lifeless murky cesspool is okay because, “The corps found that disposing of it there was less environmentally damaging than other options.” Why not just dump it back in the mine? There you go! Problem solved. You’re welcome.
