4,252 Pull Ups to Scale El Cap for Former Army Major

By Rocky Thompson on June 20th, 2009

A former Major in the British Army climbed El Capitan in four days with the help of a few friends. He’d lost the use of his legs after a rocket attack in 2008 and now manages to get around on crutches. Doctors told Phil Packer he’d never walk again, but he lined up at the start of the London Marathon anyway. He covered only about two miles a day and took two weeks to finish the course. He’d already planned on El Cap before the marathon, so he teamed up with Help for Heroes to try to raise some money. After four days and 4,252 pull-ups, Phil helped raise nearly $2 million for the charity. That reminds me that I should try to do a pull-up today.
