Bear Bags Instead of Bear Canisters

By Rocky Thompson on June 15th, 2009

Instead of carrying an oil drum into the backcountry you could hoist one of these Ursack bulletproof bags from a tree. If a bear gets into it all of your food will be mashed into a giant edible ball, but the animal won’t be able to tear open the bag and eat all your NutterButters. The Ursack costs $65 and an optional aluminum sleeve for $20, which lends some rigidity if that’s your thing. The problem with the Ursack is that bears can still smell food through it, so you end up having to use these Ursack Odor Barriers to compartmentalize all your stuff.

It’s probably worth noting that these are not approved for use in the major national parks in California. According to Ursack’s website, they are awaiting a court decision on the matter since they had to sue.
