GoPro HERO Wide-Angle Cameras

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

In a culture of Twitter, Facebook, blogging, and YouTube we’ve come to love over sharing. It’s nice when a company introduces a new product to make that over sharing more seamless and cheaper. GoPro Cameras with their many action sport mounting devices now have a wide-angle camera out. The GoPro Helmet HERO Wide sells for $190 and ratchets onto the top of your lid for easy shooting and eventual uploading to YouTube.

No Batteries: Pure Water (Urine) Flashlight

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Hand crank flashlights are kind of stupid and annoying because you need to crank them and they don’t really put out much light. This no-battery light might seem like a better idea until you realize that carrying two AAA batteries would be a lot easier than trying to urinate into a AA-size battery. The NoPoPo lantern can be used as a flashlight or lantern and can be stored up to 10 years before its first use. The NoPoPo machine runs on fluids like beer, juice, soda, saliva, or urine. The technology might not be dialed yet, but I’m hoping that within 10 years carrying a case of beer into the backcountry would be the equivalent of carrying a generator. The NoPoPo lantern costs about $40.

Backcountry.com Athlete Noah Howell on the Stupor Tour in Utah

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Check in with Backcountry.com Athlete Noah Howell’s blog for a 16hrs 6min tour from Alta resort to Salt Lake City while tagging all major peaks on the way and exiting Bells Canyon. Howel and his friend Jared logged 8700ft of vert and descended 12700ft on the day. Jared wore spandex, but his shorts helped him air a rockband at the end of a long day so we can’t hold it against him. Noah has a ton of pics from the Stupor Tour up on his blog.

Hawks Are Probably More Scared of You Than You Are of Them. AAAAAHHHHH!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Hikers in Newfoundland will have to begin carrying tennis rackets strapped to bat away birds. A pair of hawks attacked two hikers last week leaving them with cuts and bruises on their heads.

The second hiker, Dennis Baker said the bird also attacked him from behind later that day. “All of a sudden, bang, I felt a very heavy jolt on the back of my head,” Baker said. “Thirty seconds later, it hit me again.”

Apparently hawk attacks actually happen. There’s this hilarious video about a lady getting attacked by some in her yard, and a 13-year-old was attacked at a baseball game last year.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Backcountry.com Athlete Jeremy Jones filed a post form his Alps Project-taking split boarding to big lines in Europe. Jones teamed up with local Xavier Delerue for the 10-hour slogs on split boards to track down monster lines. This is a photo of Jones’ essential Euro kit, which he says weighs about 30 pounds and makes the AK kit feel light. Jeremy Jones’ blog is loaded with more pics and details of the trip.
