National Park Service Trying to Go Green
By Rocky Thompson on April 3rd, 2009
One of my friends who worked at the South Pole Research Station called it as an environmental nightmare. He said it’s one of the cleanest spots in the world, but the scientists could only take atmospheric readings upwind of the station because diesel fumes belching out of the buildings clouded everything on the other side. It turns out that the National Park Service is just as bad, but at least they’re trying to turn it all around and be carbon neutral by 2016. All those pickup trucks and heated buildings the National Park Service has account for the equivalent of a year’s worth of carbon emissions from 2,667 homes. They’re already began installing solar panels and changing from big trucks to small ones with detachable trailers.
