How to Survive Falling Through the Ice

By Rocky Thompson on March 17th, 2009

Wired has a short feature on how to survive an accidental polar bear plunge. If I ever fall through the ice, I know that I’ll sit there bobbing in the water remembering that I wrote this post but unable to recall the content. It’s like being able to remember a map but not the words written on it while you’re playing Trivial Pursuit. The basics of ice-bobbing survival are that you turn back in the direction from which you were walking (since it was strong enough to support you) and try to get your torso up before dolphin-kicking yourself back onto the ice. An alternative wiki how-to on this topic could simply say, “Don’t walk on frozen lakes in spring.” Check out Wired for the how-to, including helpful drawings.
