Coghlan’s Snake Bite Kit: Saving Hikers for 50 Years
By Rocky Thompson on March 12th, 2009If your hopes are pinned on this Coghlan’s Snake Bite Kit, then god help you. It would be a funny joke to give this to someone as a gift, but remove the suction cups and scalpal that come with it and replace that stuff with stuff to make a tiny Snakebite cocktail. Hell, they’re not worth saving anyways if they can’t take a joke.
Coghlan’s turns 50 years old this week. Congratulations on their milestone anniversary, and thanks to them for making cool outdoor stuff that’s fun to play with but something you never, never want to rely on.

Coghlan’s makes two items I absolutely rely on. Their orange, plastic match containers are great for REI Storm Proof matches - although you have to trim about 1/8-1/4 inch off the end you don’t light. Easy to open when you need to, unlike the metal match containers, and only a buck or two. The other is an orange, plastic bag. Some people keep a large leaf bag in their pack for emergencies (remember to cut a hole for your head. Arm holes are optional.) The Coghlan’s version is about 7 feet long, so even most taller people won’t have a lot exposed when using it as an emergency shelter or sleeping bag. I find them on sale for about $5 and buy as many as I can.
Congratulations Coghlan’s on 50 years and thanks for two fantastic items I don’t leave home without - especially in my search and rescue pack.
