KneeBinding Sideways Heel Release

By Rocky Thompson on March 11th, 2009

The KneeBinding seeks to fix the problem of blown ACLs caused by slow, laterally rotating falls. This is the same thing Salomon said they’d fix with Spheric back in 1997 and Marker said they’d fix with whatever their knock-off Spheric was called—I stopped paying attention to Marker altogether around ‘97. The KneeBinding features what they call a ‘PureLateral’ heel release that can pop free your boot’s heel completely sideways. The KneeBindings will sell for about $500 a set next fall and will feature a 3 - 12 DIN setting depending on model.

What’s more interesting to me here is that someone bothered starting their own binding company. It’s not exactly the sexiest product group to get into, and bindings are sold more as an accessory to skis than a destination gear piece. My line at my old shop was, “These are the bindings that match your ski’s color. Do you know what length pole you need?”

The KneeBinding could use a little sexing up—I guess they went for a name that says more of what it does than sells the product. I’d recommend their next model is the KneePOP! or the Spheric II. In the end, if this actually works, then it might be worth making a purchase from KneeBinding until Salomon and Marker find a way to knock off their technology.
