Superhero Air Tank and Regulator

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

phantom-air

This would be a nice addition to PFDs and wetsuits for people who fear the hold-down. This concept breather is a tiny air tank that sits on your chest like a superhero badge, and you’d pull out the retractile regulator for five minutes of air when you need it. If it ever comes to fruition, it’ll likely be marketed as a backup to SCUBA divers, kind of like a compact version of Spare Air. If they’re able to make it this small, it’d be a nice option for tow-in surfers who don’t need to worry about having a metal disc stuck between their chest and board while paddling.

Damn, David Zabriskie had a TAG Watch?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Garmin-Slipstream rider and Salt Lake inhabitant David Zabriskie’s home was robbed while the owner was pedaling around California in some race. Velo News has the full story, but it looks like he lost a lot of fancy bikes.

Among those items stolen from Zabriskie’s home are:
Black 2008 Subaru Outback, Utah plate A189NC
Black 2006 Toyota Scion, Utah plate 094VWM
Giro D Italia Race Medal (approx. 6″ circumference)
Olympic Seiko watch
Beijing Olympic ring (silver) with initials “DZ” engraved ($4,000)
Olympic Time Trial Bike, plus 12 other bikes (combined value of $100,000)
Cervelo (black/red) bike frame - team issued ($5000)
Tag Heuer watch ($6,000)
Bose Speaker/Receiver System ($15,000)
Sony 52″ flat screen TV ($4,000)
Two Mac Books and one Mac desktop, plus hard drive ($8,000)
A pair of Space legs, a recovery compression system for legs ($5,000)
7 Marvel sideshow statues ($11,000)

What the hell is a Marvel sideshow statue, and how much money does Zabriskie make that he collects them?

Swobo Pedal & Track Nut Wrench

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

swobo-wench

I don’t know what I’d do if Swobo ever made a piece of gear that didn’t come with an attached bottle opener. Their new pedal wrench/15mm track nut wrench can, of course, also be used by a thirsty cyclist to pop a few Tom Bernaskis while changing flats, removing pedals, or watching TV alone. It’s reminiscent of Surly’s Jethro Tule, except this wrench is actually long enough to get the torque necessary for loosening a 15mm nut on your back wheel. The Swobo wrench costs $20.

SRAM’s Anorexic MTB 10-Speed Group

sram-xx

SRAM’s claiming that their upcoming XX Mountain Bike Group will weigh 2300 grams including disc brakes. I’m not sure if that’s a pair of discs, or maybe you’re supposed to ride with only a front brake to save weight. For people who don’t have a gram scale suspended from from their rafters of their garge, 2300 grams is about five pounds. The SRAM XX will weigh about the same as a complete 2009 Dura Ace setup, so we might see this spun into a cyclocross thing even though it seems to be intended as a straight up mountain bike rig.
