If you ski or board in the backcountry, and you still need convincing after watching this video from Haines, Alaska, you’re likely either A. living tissue over a metal endo-skeleton, or B. going to be dead/injured soon from an acute case of apathy. In this clip, skier Chris Cardello proves beyond a doubt that if you are buried by an avalanche, wearing and properly using an Avalung could seriously increase your chances for survival. Thanks to remarkable presence of mind, combined with Level II Avalanche training, Chris was also quick enough to reach his other hand toward the surface while he held the mouthpiece in place. Most importantly, he might never have been found had he not also been wearing a beacon. While he was only buried for a few minutes, the experience left Mr. Cordello with a ruptured Achilles tendon and some of the most chilling real-life avy victim footage ever caught on film. Watch, have nightmares, and learn. Rob de Luca 0 Responses to “Somebody Buy This Guy A Beer”Leave a Reply |

I ve been subscribed to this blog for a while, but I ve never commented on anything. But that demands one. I ve never been so wrapped up in a youtube video - ever. The sound of his breathing has scarred me for life. I m so glad he s still breathing, though.
Probably scarier than The Shinning and The Changeling combined. Probably.
thanks rob, that just made me quit skiing
It s tough to watch–more so because it s an ad for a Black Diamond Avalung than because the guy gets buried. Seeing his buddies dig him out at the end of the video reminds me that I forgot to call everyone I know and thank them in advance for digging me our of an avalanche, should the need ever arise.
His panicked breathing is haunting.
Two words: Absolutely chilling.
that it absolutely terrifying
Holy crap! dude doesn t need a beer, he needs a care for the finest suds man can find.
