Cyclist Beaten for Telling Other Bikers to Get Lights

Saving the world by biking to work is hard enough—the last thing I need is some even more self-righteous asshole than myself telling me how to do it better. Apparently a couple in Milwaukee, WI agreed with me, because they pummeled a 51-year-old fellow cyclist after he yelled at them to “Get some lights!” As much as I commend a modern American couple for being able to come together and strengthen their relationship by sharing their love of cycling, I think maybe this experience took things a tiny bit far. Especially considering that the 51-year-old guy willing gave the woman in this story a bike light because he had several extra, and his only thanks to have her gentleman friend clobber him in the skull. Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to help people.

And I thought that everyone knows you cant put a light on a TT bike.

This was actually in Madison, though it appeared in the Milwaukee paper. It s been the topic of Milwaukee biking message lists all day. Most people agreed: It s best to just keep your mouth shut. Update: There s been an arrest: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/lifestyle/35544679.html

oh no, the oil companies are planting this “light situation” to break up bicycle culture from the inside.

Yes, the guy deserved to be beaten up because he didn t keep his mouth shut…. He owns a bike shop and therefore probably is a big proponent of bike safety. Also, it s common courtesy to have a light on the bike. Let s all applaud the dbag who overreacted and beat the guy up.

Let me get this right– some knob on a fancy bike breaks the law by not having a light on his bike at night and beats up a guy for suggesting he follow the law. So he breaks 2 laws and you defend him. http://www.bfw.org/advocacy/index.php?category_id=4033&subcategory_id=5556 Would you defend the first guy for freedom of speech? As Will Rogers liked to say, “Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose,” or something close to that.
