On the Lighter Side: Police Taser Former Steamboat Mayor
By Rocky Thompson on July 24th, 2008
Police broke down the door at the home of the former mayor of Steamboat Springs and tasered her after she ignored calls to pullover and went into her house.
Here’s a wonderful quote from the police chief about the incident:
“I have no reason to believe the actions that were taken were not appropriate,†he said about the arrest. â€The use of the Taser is the most humanitarian tool we have. It has a low probability of injury both to the suspect and the officer.â€
A taser is your most humanitarian tool? Really? In a sleepy ski town? Maybe you could try, oh, I don’t know, talking next time? What’s wrong—that’s not humanitarian enough?
Thanks Doug
did they say “her” ? uh,she must have been one big gal for them to decide she needed taking down instead of just talking down.My guess is small town over zealous cops, oh yeah!,we got ‘em here in Grand jct., colorado to,reactionary instead of proactionary. sounds like she should of pulled over but who knows the true reason why she didn’t?,but let’s try out new fangled weapon on her even if it is deadly only 1 in 1000 cases.
There is nothing like passing judgment from the safety of your living room couch. It’s totally painless and risk free. One thing I’ve learned in the past 24 years in law enforcement, is never pass judgment unless you were there or have been presented with all the facts. Oh, I read the paper, and it tells the whole story. You think so? I’ve been involved in events that did make the paper. What was portrayed vaguely resembled what actually happened. Yea, I know, women and kids need to be handled with a softer touch. Tell that to Sean McDonald of the NYPD, paralyzed from the neck down after being shot in the back of the head by a 16 year old he was “nice” to. He is only one example of many officers who fell at the hands of individuals that they were “nice” to. I’m not saying that cops deal with everyone with an iron fist, I am merely suggesting that you try to understand what police potentially are up against. Every encounter with the public is different and can change in an instant. If force must be used, it must be appropriate for the threat. Her Honor was already failing to comply with lawful orders. Her Honor already placed her former constituents at risk by DUI. What else was she doing or capable of doing? I don’t know. I wasn’t there. Nether were you.
“Try talking to her next time” ha ha ha … hello… that’s what they were trying to do when the told her to pull over and she ignored them.
She got exactly what she deserved… a nice jolt to remind her she isn’t above the law.
