Carpet Burn Surfing Machine

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I used to do something like this, only it was with an empty laundry basket and the stairs that went into the basement. Of course that was before helmets, not that I’m bragging. Brush Boarding is carpet surfing that you do on spinning rollers on a quarter pipe. I can just imagine becoming an expert at this and then paddling into a real lineup and acting like I know what I’m doing.

Mexican Navy Fishing for Sharks that Killed Surfers

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

shark-fishing

The Mexican Navy is on the hunt for at least one criminal who won’t be able to offer bribes. After the attacks of several surfers and swimmers—some of which resulted in deaths—the Mexican Navy is out trawling for the sharks that did it. This guy from Texas tells his story:

Grimes, 49, said he paddled madly towards the shore after feeling a shark glide across the bottom of his feet as he straddled his surfboard.

“Then it bumped me really hard. I thought, ‘That’s definitely a big shark.’ I took about three more strokes and he grabbed my arm,” said Grimes, who pulled himself free and made it to the beach.

Aren’t several species of sharks already endangered from over fishing? Well, even if they are not endangered, it looks like there are still too many of the killing machines out there.

Never Lose a Canoe Paddle (as long as you didn’t also lose the flashlight)

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

solas

I’m that guy who drops his paddle every time he hits the rapids. Just drop that sucker and hold onto the gunnels like you’re getting dragged out of hell until things flatten out. Then have your buddy paddle you over to pick it and anything else up when it washes out. Now you can find your paddle or floating friend at night if you thought to treat your gear to some SOLAS 3M Marine Reflective Tape. The $30 roll of waterproof tape lights up like a drunk at the mention of happy hour when you hit it with a flashlight.

Mini Bike for Big People from Bianchi

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

mini-velo

I had a miniature stick of travel deodorant that a girl picked up once and declared as “so cute.” I’ve never understood why the miniaturization process makes products inherently cute. Regardless, this new Bianchi Mini Velo will be a big hit with the miniature-museum-going crowd. Bianchi makes a full line of Small Wheel bikes, but right now they’re only available in Japan. It’d be fun to get a Smart Car and roll around with a  couple of these on the roof rack.

Prevent Jetlag by Fasting

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

jetlag

Those free drinks on international flights will get on top of you pretty quick when you haven’t eaten if 16 hours. A study conducted at Harvard Medical School found that not eating for 16 hours before your flight can effectively reset your body’s circadian clock (whatever the hell that is) helping you beat jetlag at its own game. Since “jetlag” will be an outdated term, we’ll begin using “Time Travel” to describe not eating for 16 hours and then hopping on a flight to Prague and drinking 3 liters of German beer. It’s like the flight never happened.

gravis-skate-shoes

It was only a matter of time until Gravis quit making shoes that look like skate shoes and began making skate shoes. Gravis IV skateboarding is the spinoff Gravis brand that will launch their first shoe, The Viking Hi LX Ltd, which is a high-top skate shoe that looks kind of like the first Nike Air Jordans. About time, guys.

Invasion from Planet C: The Sci-Fi Surf Movie

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

The Invasion! From Planet C surf movie is like an early Devo video combined with the mise en abyme about fleshy headed mutants in Strange Brew. I just kept thinking, “Why are those recumbent bike riders surfing?” At least it looked fun and cheap to make.

Whatever Happened to Nishiki Bikes?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

nishiki-bikes-coolness

The MTBR forum has a caption contest that also serves as a reminder to us all that cycling has always been at the forefront of fashion and ideas. The idea in this photo was to look very fashionable and awesome. It totally worked. Did Nishiki go out of business about the time they ran this ad?

Aquapac Hard Lens Camera Case Does Little to Dull Pain of Returning to Work After a Long Weekend

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

aquapac-camera-case

If you had one more day off, you would have gone to the beach and taken photos of the girls in bikinis diving for scallops. The Aquapac Small Camera Case with Hard Lens would have ensured that the pictures didn’t appear foggy or look like they were shot through beer goggles, and you probably would have gotten a couple good shots before the other beachgoers shamed you into leaving them alone. The Aquapac Small Camera Case costs $45.
