Hangboard Ninja Gymnast Snowboarding Deathtrap
By Rocky Thompson on April 21st, 2008It’s a combination of hang gliding, snowboarding, gymnastics, and slamming your head into a tree at 30 mph. The hangboard was invented in 2001 by a Canadian and then tested on what we can assume was an uncrowded hill.
The “pilot” climbs aboard the HangBoard, which consists of an apparatus bolted to a standard snowboard in place of the bindings. The pilot hangs in a harness below a T-shaped bar, grips the handlebars in front and clamps her feet into rudders at the back. You’re not vertical, you’re horizontal, and most of the control comes from shifting your weight, with the rudders double as steering and brakes.

“surrender to the hangboard”?
Can’t wait to hangboard some powder.
The name of the new sport: “Bowling for skiiers”.
Should be very popular at Keystone next year…they can go for a new morbidity record.
Might have some usage for adaptive riding. Maybe. But I wonder what happens when you catch an edge and break your mast.
I guess you gotta be careful to keep your mouth closed in the pow.
Landing after getting some air looks like a body slam.
Somebody should get those guys some big boy pants.
That is about the lamest thing I seen. Very Canadian.
I need to see the blooper reel from that video! Snowriders pummeled to death by their hangboards!
Yes, what Tony said. “Surrender to the Hangboard”!?! Did I really hear him say that? Yikes!
I love this blog. Unbelievable, really.
“Bowling for skiers”…
Seriously? People have never gone down a snow-covered hill face-first? I believe I did only about thirty years ago on my SLED!
Isn’t that the kind of rig pet groomers use to shave poodles?
