Nordic Skating: A Good Way to Kill Off the Clumsier Members of Our Species.

According to CNN, Nordic skating is gaining popularity in New England. The sport, comparable to skate skiing in technique and Rollerblading in awesomeness, guarantees a good workout, especially if the session involves clawing one’s way out of a break in the ice (a popular maneuver in Sweden). The skates consist of long, slightly curved blades of death that clip into cross-country ski boots. High-speed Nordic skater collisions guarantee to be gory.    I get this…for New England. Folks from the east coast are so accustomed to ice, they come over here (Japan) and think our groomed runs are powder.

   The tips on those things look great for slicing off cold fingers and the unfortunate scrotum in the event of a nasty pile-up. Put it on ice!

   It’s not so crazy. The propulsive skating form is perfectly suited to multiple modes: inline, ice, nordic, and XC skating. Check the video here XC-C Free Binding System in Action of a system designed by Diederik Hol - who formerly collaborated with Exel in their Nordic projects. This XC Binding System has been raced (quietly during its development) in the World Cup.

   Look at those poles, they’re more like bayonets! As is, I’m not sure I’m interested, but add in a rollerball-type arena and maybe some tridents…and I’m there, baby.

   Nordic skating has been enjoyed in Sweden for over 100 years,
   but for some reason, information about it has
   been suppressed in North America.
