The Top Ten Best and Worst Cities for Climbing

By Rocky Thompson on September 13th, 2007

Climbing Magazine ran a feature on the best and worst places for rock climbers to live. The lists are based on maps created by Tom Dilts that identify US locations in the lower 48 with the greatest density of crags rated in Tim Toula’s Rock ‘N’ Road. How can there be so many bad places to climb in Texas? oh wait never-mind you said texas

As a native Texan, I’m so very offended. Beaumont offers the opportunity to climb…out of bed to get your unemployment check because there hasn’t been a good job there in years. Laredo picks up where Beaumont leaves off. You have to get two jobs there just to climb up to poverty. My hometown of Houston…I climbed out of there 20 years ago. Corpus has sand dune climbing…very nice beaches. Our neighbor New Orleans offers a fifty foot climb up to sea level. We’re so misunderstood!

  4. C.C.

Salt Lake should be #1 followed by St. Louis (yes that’s right) SOILL. I love that Boulder didn’t even make the list, finally somebody has a clue about that place.

Thank God you did not list Bend Oregon. This place sucks! There is nothing to do here so, all you sorry ass Californians can stay in L.A.!

  12. BULL*

Bull Sh_t. SEATTLE, NUMBER #1, hands down for major cities (there may be better places, but they can’t be called cities) This list is for rock climbing, not mountain climbing. Who has Mt. Rainier and the North Cascades. Who has OVER FIVE TIMES as much glaciers as the next most glaciated state. Where else can you go ice climbing in August. Yes, in Seattle you can drive about two hours and ICE CLIMB IN AUGUST at 12,000 feet. When measured from base to summit our tallest mountains are much, much bigger than anything in Colorado (look it up) – ours just start at sea level. Our mountains are also generally steeper. They have practically ALL OF THE GLACIERS IN THE LOWER 48. I’ve been to Denver. Not impressed. Rock climbing, sure. But climbing is about climbing mountains, not hills that 14-year olds can walk up. Between this and the Super Bowl I think the rest of the coutnry is just stupid or jelous. I just hope they stop moving here.
