Recycled Tires Turned New Sandals

Making your own shoes from tires sounds like a line uttered in a pathetically sad sentimental movie about a college debate team. But apparently the recycled messenger bag market is so saturated that Splaff Flopps decided to go into flip-flops alongside their urban shoulder bags. Their $38 Lazy Boy Flip-Flop is made with recycled car tires, bicycle inner tubes, and hemp. They’ve received some rave reviews from the guys at Phoresia.

[...] The shoemakers at Simple are joining Splaff Flopps in making sandals from old car tires this summer. Currently, Simple makes only their effeminate-looking men’s Stop Global Warming Toepeeka flip-flops with car tire outsoles and other post-consumer waste, and Simple ships the sandals without stuffing in a biodegradable bag. It sounds like they’ll be expanding the car tire outsoles to their presently all-natural Toe Foo line. Simple says they can make six size-10 sandals from one car tire. I wonder if car tire sandals float. I bet they work okay as a fire starter. [...]

It’s just like Nike Air, except they use old tires instead of air—so just like Nike Air. Splaff and Simple are using car tires as outsoles, but Flat Tire Footwear doesn’t go so far. Flat Tire only uses the tires to provide springy padding, so you might be helping save the environment a little, but it’s not like you can go and dump motor oil down the storm drain after buying a pair of these. [...] The ReSkin cycling patch is also reusable, just like gauze pads, cardboard milk cartons, and car tires turned into shoes. If you can’t afford the $14 for this patch, just try duct tape. [...]
