Put the Lime in the Coconut
By on April 24th, 2007The Shimano Coasting Post started the debate on the automatic vs. manual shifting of bike gears. Trek Bikes is using that technology with their LIME bike under the slogan “ride at your speed.”
From their website, you can see its general marketing madness and quick uptake to the public. Its a pretty cool concept and at $580 not outside the realm of my pocketbook.
This idea of casual exercise also reminds me of an article I read about Reebok’s new marketing push: Run Easy, which says “there’s no point to doing it if you don’t enjoy it.”
In a culture where obesity and fast-food dominate an inordinate amount of news, are these initiatives bringing health to the masses, or a slacker way of getting your exercise?

I don’t think I would be a huge fan of the auto shift. I like having the control to get more power when I need it. Plus if my MP3 player stumbles on to the Rocky training montage I like to give myself a tougher workout.
