Even though coverage is spotty when you’re hiking or climbing, cell phones have probably saved more lives than all the Recco, avalanche beacons, PLBs, and GPS trackers combined. This hand-crank cell phone charger will put out 20 minutes of light from 5 LEDs and give you about two minutes of talk time. Two minutes won’t give you a lot of chat time when you’re trying to tell the people at 911 where you are, but maybe next time you’ll remember to charge your phone. It’s only available in Japan right now, which is probably a good thing for me—I know I would end up using this thing as my only charger after the next time I lose mine.
