Coffee Table Death Books

over the edge

The only thing better than reading about your favorite places from the comfort of a cushy chair with a cup of cocoa is reading about all the people who met untimely deaths at those places. Michael Ghiglieri and Charles “Butch” Farabee are releasing Off the Wall: Death in Yosemite, which is the sequel to Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon.

Those stories of death include rock climbing accidents, river drownings, suicides, lightning strikes, free-fall BASE jumpers whose parachutes malfunctioned, lost hikers who’ve mysteriously disappeared, dramatic car crashes, gruesome murders and more.

Ghiglieri says his books are to catalog the history of the parks’ deaths while entertaining readers with fatal mistakes that could teach them lessons. For example, just from reading this article I’ve learned that it would not be wise to crash a plane filled with marijuana into a high-country lake.

    High-country, how ironic.

[...] Fishing just became the most popular sport for people who like reading about gruesome injuries. It used to be basketball, but now statisticians say that taking to the streams and lakes offers the best chance for eye damage. The interesting thing is that no one can explain why fishing eye injuries are on the rise, but data from the Helen Keller Foundation proves it. Hmm, maybe it has something to do with drinking tons of beer while throwing around barbed hooks? I’ll keep my sunglasses on.   By Rocky Thompson [...]
