I thought Lou Dawson had lost it when I started reading his post about drilling holes in his skis. “Maybe he’s gone over the edge like all those ultralight nuts,” I thought. It was reminiscent of the customer I helped several years ago who suggested he could just cut the tails off his skis if they were too long.

Not to worry, though. Dawson was talking about drilling holes in the tips of his skis in case he needed to use them as an emergency sled. If putting holes in your skis freaks you out, another option is the Brooks-Range Mountaineering Rescue Sled. This $198 piece of nylon stretches over your skis to haul your buddy out after he bounces off a couple rocks.
