[...] Don’t end up pinned under your 25lb bike like this poor bastard—next time you go out on the trail take the Send4Help SkyMinder Personal Safety Alarm. Hitting a button notifies an underpaid operator that you’re in trouble, and it gives that person your location via built-in GPS. He figures out where you are and decides the appropriate person to call, probably Dominos Pizza, no wait, Papa Johns. The SkyMinder costs $400 up front and then there’s a $40 monthly fee for something you’ll probably never use. At those prices, you could pay a cell phone bill and get an ACR Personal Locator Beacon. I’m glad this thing is only available in the UK. By Rocky Thompson [...]

[...] You like to run, but you’re not in good enough shape to outrun muggers going after your iPod? The Quantum Satellite Technology running shoes made by Isaac Daniel come with a hidden panic button that activates a GPS emergency beacon. It’s unclear who the emergency GPS notifies, maybe just your desktop at home? If the shoes are like the ACR Personal Locator Beacon, then they’ll call the Coast Guard who will call around to see if anyone knows where you are before sending the police to your location. Try to fight your assailants off for a good hour or so before the police arrive, or you could call them on your cell phone. [...]

[...] Any jacket can keep you warm, but the Hemp Hoodlamb might save your life. It doesn’t come with a built-in PLB or reflective safety lights—this $3200 jacket from Amsterdam is bulletproof. Just what you need for the après ski if you’re the kind of guy who likes to throw elbows on the traverse—it’s only a matter of time until someone follows you home and burns your house down, at least they won’t be able to shoot you.
