An Honest Way to Make a Living
By Rocky Thompson on September 13th, 2006
What is it about every idiot that thinks it’s a good idea to start a T-shirt company? Among all the T-shirt specific companies I can think of one that’s good, but apparently the glamour of designing tees for a living has such a strong draw that companies like Turkey and The Ryde get into the mix. These companies are always from southern California and their shirts are somewhere between legitimate art and saying something like “pull my finger†or “talk to the hand.â€
Wow, I can’t believe you just plugged Threadless over The Ryde… Are you being serious or was that whole paragraph just some half-sarcastic attempt at being coy? Nevermind, I already know the answer to that one. Smoking a lil too much Marley are we?
Threadless is LAME. I have only bought a few shirts from them after seeing about 1,000 designs from crappy artists and design students. I own a few shirts from The Ryde as well and wear them often. I’ve been asked at least 10 times each where I got the shirt from. I would actually wear about half their line, which is more than I can say for most companies.
I read a few of your other posts in the ASR section and most of them seem to be in-line with your pessimistic attitude. Take things for what they’re worth: in order to be in business, you need to provide a product or service. That means if you sell t-shirts, whether you’re Billabong or Threadless, you have to provide a certain amount of value and variety to a large enough audience to keep your doors open. Not everything can be as “too-cool-for-school” as you are, buddy. Maybe you need a reality check, Rocky. If you hate ASR so much why don’t you find something else to do?
